TheTransitioner Organization

The non-profit organization TheTransitioner was officially created Jan 27, 2007 (see official publicationexternal link). You can read its articles.

Why a non-profit organization?

The objective of creating a non-profit organization is to have a legal vehicle which aim is to develop Collective Intelligence through R&D, publication (internet, books, papers...), new technologies (i.e. open money), public events and trainings.

The status of 'non-profit' has been chosen for the following reasons:

  • Ideological: all our work is public domain for common good. Hence there is no proprietarization of what we consider to belong to everyone.
  • Practical: it is today a light structure that doesn't require heavy administration, at least in its starting phase.
  • Structural: in the longer term our wish is to develop a governance similar to Chaordic Commonsexternal link (much more study work is still necessary). A non-profit organization is likely to be the most adapted legal format (let's note that legal tools today are particularly outdated and not adapted to organizations like ours – this is a rough and ready settlement).

In the short term

For now we begin modestly. Governance is reduced to 3 members: a President, a Secretary, a Treasurer (see Bureau members in the French site). Indeed we have a legal, light, costless legal vehicle that can quickly take off, make expenses, receive funding, organize seminars and other events,

In the medium and long term

  • As explained earlier we want to develop a powerful governance
  • We will create a member status in order to be part of this governance
  • We want to become a state-approved organization
  • We want to receive research funding and donations from foundations
