International Court of Justice

International Criminal Court
Official ICC website. ICC is an independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The ICC is based on a treaty, joined by 103 countries. The ICC is a court of last resort and only tries those accused of the gravest crimes. 2

Global Policy Forum – International Justice
For centuries, jurists defined international law solely in terms of relations between states. World leaders acted with impunity because international law did not hold them accountable. But this has been changing. The UN tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia address the legal responsibilities of individuals who have committed crimes of war and crimes against humanity. National courts, too, have exercised jurisdiction over world leaders, and some, such as former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, have been charged by courts in many countries. The International Criminal Court will take this process further still. This page tracks these and other developments that bring hope of a more just international order. 3

USJF was founded in 1979 by attorneys seeking to advance the conservative viewpoint in the judicial arena. USJF has contributed directly and indirectly to legal defense efforts in many celebrated cases involving fundamental conservative principles. Site includes commentaries on pro life, education, pledge of allegiance and education issues. 4

International Center for Transitional Justice
ICTJ assists countries pursuing accountability for past mass atrocity or human rights abuse. The Center works in societies emerging from repressive rule or armed conflict, as well as in established democracies where historical injustices or systemic abuse remain unresolved. The ICTJ assists in the development of integrated, comprehensive, and localized approaches to transitional justice comprising five key elements: prosecuting perpetrators, documenting and acknowledging violations through non-judicial means such as truth commissions, reforming abusive institutions, providing reparations to victims, and facilitating reconciliation processes. 5

Human Rights First – Crimes Against Humanity
The Crimes against Humanity program at Human Rights First acts to halt catastrophic violations of human rights currently in progress and to support international efforts to ensure that states fulfill their responsibility to protect people under their jurisdiction from gross violations of human rights. Program includes prevention & protection as well as justice & accountability. 6

American Civil Liberties Union
The ACLU's mission is to preserve the Bill of Rights' protections and guarantees for all people. If the rights of society's most vulnerable members can be denied, everyone's are imperiled. News, features and several issues, including national security, gay/lesbian right, and rights of the poor, are posted. 8

National Archive of Criminal Justice
The mission of NACJD is to facilitate research in criminal justice and criminology, through the preservation, enhancement, and sharing of computerized data resources; through the production of original research based on archived data; and through specialized training workshops in quantitative analysis of crime and justice data. Site features resource guides on capital punishment, homicide, and violence against women. 10

Amnesty USA – War on Terror
September 11, 2001, caused many to reflect upon the fundamental values on which the U.S. was founded: freedom of speech, respect for human dignity, freedom of religion, justice for all, tolerance. It is imperative that the United States stand for the principles of unalienable, universal rights. Otherwise, those who wage war on human rights will have won the battle against freedom. Amnesty International is concerned the "war on terror" not become an excuse to deny human rights. Site features background on torture, detention, civil rights and the right to a fair trial. 11

Death Penalty Information Center
DPIC is a non-profit organization serving the media and the public with analysis and information on issues concerning capital punishment. The Center was founded in 1990 and prepares in-depth reports, issues press releases, conducts briefings for journalists, and serves as a resource to those working on this issue. Site includes news, tools – execution database, state by state information – and issues, to include arbitrariness of the death penalty, race, and costs. 12

Women’s Initiatives For Gender Justice
Based in The Hague, The Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice is an international women’s human rights organization advocating for gender-inclusive justice and working towards an effective and independent International Criminal Court (ICC). The Darfur Consortium is a coalition of more than thirty Africa-based and Africa-focused NGOs, dedicated to the working together to promote a just, peaceful and sustainable end to the ongoing humanitarian and human rights crisis in Darfur. 15
